The following regulations shall govern the dress and grooming of students (male and female) in all grades at Cab Calloway School of the Arts. Student dress may vary with instructional activity and special events when announced by the Dean.
1. All shirts are required to have sleeves. Students may wear short or long sleeved collared shirts, or may wear t-shirts as long as the t-shirts have a sleeve and are not revealing in any way.
2. Shorts and skirts must be worn within no more than 2 inches (about the length of a double A battery) above the top of the knee. Opaque leggings are required if a garment is shorter than the length designated above.
3. The mid-section of the body must be entirely covered at all times.
4. Clothing that is extremely tight or revealing IS NOT PERMITTED.
5. Dance classes and physical education classes will provide guidelines for attire for those programs. When students are not in such classes, the Cab Calloway dress code is in effect at all times.
6. No derogatory comments or inappropriate language (e.g. curse words) are permitted on student’s clothing or belongings such as a book bag.
For clarification purposes –
If a skirt or shorts are worn that are shorter than the required length, LEGGINGS that are completely opaque (NOT ABLE TO SEE THROUGH AT ALL) MUST be worn underneath. Tights or hosiery that are at all see-through are not acceptable to be worn under such a skirt/shorts. The only acceptable way to wear a skirt or shorts that are shorter than a battery’s length above the knee will be if a student ALSO wears appropriate leggings. Students who wear skirts/shorts within the dress code requirements may, of course, wear them with accompanying tights/hosiery as desired.
The school administration reserves the right to make a judgment call on appropriate attire when necessary.
Please note: Due to the excessive number of students who did not adhere to the written dress code in previous years we’ve determined a more specific dress code policy to be necessary. This policy is subject to review by a school committee with parent, teacher, and administrative representation, and may lead to a student uniform policy should the committee deem it necessary.
