CCSA HS Instrumental Assessment Requirements – 2023-2024
Wind Instruments:
- Scales: Major Scales: Please note that scales are specified by instrument pitch – not concert pitch. Major scales are to be played in standard scale rhythm (quarter note followed by 6 eighth notes) at the minimum tempo of quarter note = 120. All wind instruments will play a minimum of one octave, except for Flute and Soprano Clarinet, which will play a minimum of two octaves. Additional octaves, where possible, may be played.

- Chromatic Scale: Students will play the chromatic scale in even eighth notes at the minimum tempo of quarter note = 120. All wind instruments will play a minimum of one octave, except for Flute and Soprano Clarinet, which will play a minimum of two octaves. Starting pitch for the minimum chromatic scale is Concert Bb (except for Flute, which is Concert C.) Additional ranges – either lower or higher where possible – may be played.
- Sight Reading: All students will sight-read and play Grade 3 material.
- Solo: Play the required solo as listed.
Mallet Instruments:
