Young Choreographers' Showcase

April 26, 7:00pm

Most young dancers only get to perform a dance they choreographed themselves in their living room. But through a unique program, Cab offers its students an opportunity to do that on a much bigger stage. The school’s Young Choreographer’s Showcase (YCS) gives middle and high school students the chance to choreograph their own dance and vie for the chance to perform it.

CCSA’s middle school dance instructor, Joan Warburton-Phibbs, created this concept 17 years ago in Washington, D.C. Called the Washington Independent School Dance Festival, dancers from eight area schools participated. She brought the idea with her to CCSA, and it is now in its 10th year and the only show of its kind in the area.

“As is true in all of the arts, students must have a format to express themselves and share their view of the world. This is a one-of-a-kind chance for dance students to truly have a hand in creating their own work of art and then share it with others,” said Mrs. Warburton-Phibbs.

More than 44 groups of solo and group dancers auditioned for 22 spots to perform. They were judged on various elements including: the technical level of the dance; use of dance choreographic elements of space, timing (musicality), energy and body efforts in the movements, transitions and flow; and purpose of the dance (creativity), the dancers’ focus, and the dance’s sense of completeness. The students must also pledge that all elements of the dance are original.

Performances will be held Thursday April 26th at 7:00 pm and Friday April 27th at 8:45 am the theatre,Tickets to both shows are available at the door with a suggested donation of $10 for adults and $5 for students, seniors and children.
