Fiber Art Exhibit
September 16-October 15, 2010
Opening reception: September 16, 5-7pm
An exhibit of recent fiber art by local artists June Jenkins Peterson and Gina Bosworth will open in the Cab Calloway Art Gallery on Thursday, September 16. An artists’ reception is scheduled for September 16 from 5:00-7:00pm. The exhibit is free and open to the public Monday through Friday, 8:00am to 2:30pm, through Friday, October 15.
Both artists work with fiber; Bosworth utilizes knotting, and Peterson’s work has been described as similar to collage, incorporating a vast array of materials.
Peterson describes her work as “creative embroidery”, explaining it “gives me the freedom to explore diverse ways of shaping pieces of art with needle and thread.” She has explored a variety of techniques, including gold work, lace work done with the buttonhole stitch, as well as pulled thread and collage work. She recently began using fractals as a basis for design. A fractal is a computer-generated visual display of a complex mathematical formula. According to Peterson, “basic to all my designs are the forms and repetitions found in nature, which supply a diversity of satisfying shapes; circles and curves are my favorites.”
