Participate in tribute to Judith Jamison
Four Cab Calloway dance students are looking forward to an especially memorable field trip next Tuesday, September 7. Tenth graders Katelynn Mayers and Ashley Scherer and eighth graders Angela Russo and Simone Stancil will be traveling to the White House to participate in a dance workshop along with students from the Alvin Ailey School, Dance Theatre of Harlem and others. Following the workshop, they will attend a performance featuring dancers from the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, Paul Taylor Dance Company, Billy from Billy Elliot the Musical, The Washington Ballet, Super Cr3w, and New York City Ballet. The event is hosted by First Lady Michelle Obama as the first in a dance series. This inaugural event honors Judith Jamison, artistic director of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater.
In continuing the Obama Administration’s focus on supporting the arts and arts education, a dance workshop will be held in the White House East Room on September 7th at 3:00 PM. Dance companies will lead a segment of the workshop focusing on their genre. Students from the Alvin Ailey School, Ballet Hispanico, Cab Calloway School of the Arts (CCSA), Dance Theatre of Harlem, Interlochen Center for the Arts, The Washington School of Ballet, the National Dance Institute’s New York, Colorado and New Mexico affiliates, the Chicago Multicultural Dance Center and the Philadelphia High School for Creative and Performing Arts will participate in this 90 minute workshop and then attend the early evening performance as guests.
A Tribute to Judith Jamison will honor Jamison for her outstanding career as an American dancer, choreographer, and Artistic Director of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater for the past 20 years. Judith Jamison has been artistic director of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater for two decades. One of the most renowned figures in modern dance, she was Mr. Ailey’s muse for whom he created the tour-de-force solo Cry and other enduring roles. As a highly regarded choreographer, Ms. Jamison has created works for many different companies. She is also an author, whose autobiography was edited by Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. Ms. Jamison is the recipient of a primetime Emmy Award, the Kennedy Center Honors, and the National Medal of Arts, and she was named in TIME’s 2009 list of the world’s 100 most influential people.

Teachers travel to learn
Lisa Coburn, high school ELA teacher at Cab Calloway, attended a seminar at Harvard University’s Graduate School of Education to study The Future of Learning. She worked with teachers, librarians, principals, and administrators from every continent and 42 countries during this think tank. The main areas of exploration were: Global Education and why it can not be ignored; Digital Technology and how to embrace it to reach all students; and Neuroscience-how MRIs of brains/minds and learning differences are teaching educators new approaches to teaching. Howard Gardner was one of the key speakers.
Stephanie Smith, Cab Calloway Theatre Arts teacher, attended Teaching Shakespeare through Performance at the Globe Theatre in London, England. This intensive three-week program included over 100 hours of course work and performances. During the program, Stephanie was able to work with the Globe education staff and the Globe Theatre Company to explore how productions at the Globe are conceived and produced, and she had the opportunity to perform on the Globe Theatre stage. Stephanie also learned valuable strategies for teaching Shakespeare in the contemporary classroom.
Over the summer, Linda Emerick began a Post-Graduate Diplomate Programme in Shakespeare and the Theatre at the Shakespeare Institute in Stratford-upon-Avon through the University of Birmingham, UK. Prior to the start of the course, she visited other literary sites throughout the British Isles and saw nine plays, eight of which were written by Shakespeare. Linda teaches eighth grade ELA and a high school course, Shakespearean Studies at Cab Calloway School of the Arts.

Look Into the Future
To: Parents/Guardians of 9th Grade Students ONLY
Re: Student Pictures
Date: August 10, 2010
Dr. Daugherty, Superintendent of the RCCSD, has instructed all district high schools to take a “graduation” photograph of all incoming freshman in a cap, gown and mortarboard. This “Look into the Future” as I am calling it will take place on August 30, the first day of school. We will also take the school picture of all 9th graders at this time. Freshman students should come prepared to take their school picture which will be used for their student ID as well the yearbook. Students will take the school picture first than change into a cap and gown for the “graduation” picture.
Boys should bring a shirt and tie to wear in the “graduation” picture – we will have some shirts (various sizes) and ties available for those who may need them. We will provide the cap, gown and mortarboard as well. Whatever the girls wear for the school picture should be okay for the “graduation” picture. A composite photograph will be made and displayed in our building as an encouragement to our freshman students to stay the course and graduate.
Herff Jones, the company who takes our yearbook pictures, will be assisting us with this project.
Thank you in advance for assuring that your child comes to school on August 30 prepared to have their school picture taken.

Cab smART Summer a success!
Cab Summer is nearing the end of its inaugural season and we couldn’t be more thrilled with the results. With over 30 different courses running during our seven weeks of “smART” camp, the students have broadened their horizons beyond their imaginations. Close to 250 kids made CabSummer a part of their activities this year and interest in next year is growing at an amazing rate. Classes ranging from Musical Theatre to Fashion Design, Jazz Band to Video Game Design, and Bollywood Dance to Solo Singing are just a few examples of what has been going on in the halls of the school this June through August.
With the help of the University of Delaware Arts Bridge Scholars, we have been integrating “arts” and “smarts” throughout the summer school. Classes have been working together and basing some of their collaborations on the various themes we have had each week. The Delaware Humanities Forum has done presentations each week on topics ranging from “Shakespeare” to “the 1960’s”, “Continents & Cultures” to “Freedom”.
It has been an awesome season! Thanks to everyone for joining in on year one of CabSummer! We hope you have had as great a time as we have and look forward to seeing you all again next year!!
